International Conference on ?Water for Life in the Middle
East? will be held at the five-star Porto Bello hotel
in Antalya, Turkey, on October 10-14, 2004.
A follow-up to the First Israeli-Palestinian International Academic Conference on Water held in Switzerland in 1992, the Conference is co-chaired by Prof. Hillel Shuval of the Hebrew University and Prof. Hassan Dweik of Al Quds University, both in Jerusalem, and enjoys the support of the Israeli Water Commission and the Palestinian Water Authority.
Initiated and organized by the Israel/Palestine Center for Research and Information (IPCRI), the Conference intends to provide a forum for fruitful dialogue and for the development of mutual understanding and respect between Israeli, Palestinian and other Middle Eastern and international water specialists. By drawing together scientists, engineers, economists, lawyers, administrators and policy makers, the Conference provides a basis for enhanced cooperation with the international community in developing, managing and protecting the region?s water resources. Over 160 authors - Israelis and Palestinians, as well as others from the Middle East, Europe and North America ? submitted abstracts. Of these, the Steering Committee, made up of leading Palestinian and Israel water scientists, chose some 100 to be orally presented by the speakers, and an additional 20 to be presented in poster format.
Among the keynote speakers are Prof. Franklin Fischer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA: Prof. Tony Allan of King?s College, London, UK; Mr. Jacob Keidar of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Fadel Kawash of the Palestinian Water Authority and Mr. Fayez Bataineh of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Jordan.
The conference is co-sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its Venice office.
